On Paxos the factor that decides beach access is the road surface, not the distance, because every beach sits within about 20 minutes of Gaios. A small car of the Fiat Panda class reaches every paved and village beach with only a short walk: Monodendri, Levrechio and Mongonissi are drive-up, while Loggos and the Lakka coves of Harami and Kanoni are a short flat walk from a village-edge lot. Marmari and Orkos need a small car parked at a verge and a 5 to 10 minute walk down. The wild beaches sit at the end of unpaved tracks: Erimitis lies 2.5 to 3 km down a rutted dirt track from Magazia opposite the Shell station, with room for only about two cars at the bottom and a brutal 15 to 20 minute climb back; Kipiadi and Avlaki are similar. On these tracks a standard rental contract voids the CDW and excess waiver for any damage on unpaved roads, including tyres, underbody and clutch, so the renter carries 100 percent of the cost. The honest move is to park where the tarmac ends and walk, or to hire a quad or ATV, which handles the gravel but still rides outside the insurance. Antipaxos, home of the turquoise Vrika and Voutoumi beaches, has no roads and no cars at all, so a rental is useless there: leave it in Gaios or Lakka and cross by sea-taxi, which runs every 30 to 60 minutes from about 10:00, takes 15 minutes and costs around 25 euros per person return, cash only, with the last boat back near 16:00. Fuel needs planning even on a 10 km island: there are only two petrol stations, a Shell at Magazia and a BP about 500 metres south of Gaios, both closing for the midday siesta and on holidays and sometimes refusing cards, so refuel in the morning and carry cash. Parking fines changed under Law 5209/2025, in force since 13 September 2025: ordinary illegal parking is a flat 150 euros with the old 50 percent early-payment discount abolished, rising to 350 euros for blocking a pavement or bus route, and on a rental the company forwards the fine and adds a 30 to 40 euro admin fee. Riding a scooter or quad without a helmet is a 350 euro fine plus a 30-day licence loss.
