Beach access on Paxos, in one rule On Paxos the deciding factor is the road surface, not the distance — every beach is within about 20 minutes of Gaios. A small car (Fiat Panda class) reaches every paved and village beach with only a short walk: Monodendri, Levrechio, Mongonissi, Loggos and the Lakka coves. The wild ones — Erimitis, Kipiadi and Avlaki — sit at the end of unpaved tracks where standard rental insurance is void, so the smart move is a quad or parking where the tarmac ends and walking down. Standard rental contracts — CDW, Super CDW and even "full coverage" — explicitly exclude any damage on unpaved or off-road surfaces, along with tyres, glass, the underbody and the clutch. The moment a small rental car leaves the asphalt onto the tracks to Erimitis, Kipiadi, Avlaki or Marmari's final stretch, the renter carries 100% of the damage, and those steep, rocky climbs are exactly where it happens. Don’t drive a compact onto the Paxos dirt tracks Park where the tarmac ends and walk, hire a quad/ATV (and still read its off-road terms), or take a boat. A clutch burned out on the Erimitis climb is not covered, and trip reports describe exactly that in a Peugeot 108. The reward — a quieter beach — is not worth your full excess. Antipaxos: park the car, take the boat The island’s most famous water — Vrika and Voutoumi — is on Antipaxos, which has no cars, no roads and no fuel. The car earns its keep by getting you to the harbour early (boats fill fast in August) and by reaching quieter departure points, not by crossing. Fuel and parking fines: two things that catch drivers out Range is never the problem on a 10 km island — timing is. Paxos has exactly two petrol stations, both clustered in the south: a Shell at Magazia (the same junction you turn off for Erimitis) and a BP about 500 m south of Gaios. Both close for the midday siesta and on public holidays, and may not take cards. Island pump prices typically sit a little above the Greek mainland average. Refuel in the morning near Gaios, keep above a quarter tank, and carry cash. There is no fuel in Lakka, Loggos or anywhere on the west coast. Greece’s new Road Traffic Code, Law 5209/2025 (in force since 13 September 2025), reset the penalties — and the renter, named on the contract, pays. Ordinary illegal parking is now a flat €150, and the old 50% early-payment discount has been abolished. Blocking a bus route or pavement climbs to €350, and a disabled bay means plates removed for 60 days. On a rental the company forwards the fine and adds a €30–€40 admin fee on top. (This is the traffic code — not Law 5092/2024, which governs beach sunbeds.) No, but you can reach most. A small car drives right up to Monodendri, Levrechio and Mongonissi, and parks at the edge of Loggos, Lakka, Marmari and Orkos for a short walk. The three dirt-track beaches — Erimitis, Kipiadi and Avlaki — should not be driven in a compact, because the unpaved approach voids your CDW. Park where the tarmac ends and walk, or hire a quad. Is a quad or ATV better than a car on Paxos? A quad is the only vehicle that comfortably reaches the rutted west and north tracks, and it parks anywhere. The trade-offs: it gives no shelter from sun or rain, helmets are legally required (a €350 fine and 30-day licence loss if you skip one under Law 5209/2025), and the off-road insurance exclusion still applies. For families and luggage, a small car plus a willingness to walk is usually the better mix. How hard is the drive to Erimitis beach? Erimitis is the island’s toughest access. From Magazia, opposite the Shell station, a rutted dirt track runs 2.5–3 km through olive groves to a cliff edge with room for only about two cars and almost no turnaround. The footpath down takes 15–20 minutes and the climb back is brutal in afternoon heat. Most visitors park high and walk, take a quad, or view it from a boat at sunset. How do I get to Vrika and Voutoumi on Antipaxos? By boat only — Antipaxos has no cars or roads. Sea-taxis leave Gaios harbour roughly every 30–60 minutes from about 10:00, take 15 minutes, and cost around €25 per person return, cash only, with the last boat back near 16:00. A cheaper local ferry (€1.50 each way) lands at Agrapidia but leaves a 30-minute uphill walk. Leave your rental car parked in Gaios or Lakka. Where can I refuel on Paxos? There are only two stations, both in the south: a Shell at Magazia and a BP about 500 m south of Gaios.
